SOURCE REVIEW · SEPTEMBER 26, 2026

Role at the time: Former national security adviser; retired U.S. Army lieutenant general
Statement date: May 30, 2021

The statement

No reason. I mean, it should happen here. No reason. That’s right.

At a Dallas audience Q&A, Flynn answered a question about Myanmar’s military takeover; he subsequently denied advocating a coup in the United States.

What happened

The exchange occurred during the For God and Country Patriot Roundup. PolitiFact distinguishes Flynn’s May 29 keynote from the May 30 Q&A. The audience member asked why events in Myanmar could not happen in the United States. The quoted reply is PolitiFact’s transcription, not a new transcription made by this archive.

Why it is here — editorial assessment

The concern is the apparent endorsement of military displacement of elected government. That reading depends on the audience question and the spoken response together; the answer must not be presented without the question’s subject.

Their response

On May 31, Flynn said his position was that no coup should happen in America and accused news organizations of misrepresenting him. His explanation differs from the transcription above and belongs alongside it. This record does not infer an operational plan, an order to service members, or criminal intent.
